- One of the great evenings of recent times, with the highest emotional telepathy evident at every turn, with a group of superb musicians deep into and excited by the common language. The details? The Danny Tobias Septet at Winnie's Jazz Bar in New York City on March 14, 2025. The wonderfully inspired trumpeter Danny Tobias had been asked to bring a band to Winnie's -- not the usual quartet, but a septet -- and the OAO and I wanted to be there. Danny had brought his trumpet and Eb alto horn and his usual imaginative repertoire, and splendid colleagues: Dan Block, clarinet, tenor saxophone, and cornet; Scott Robinson, tenor saxophone and trumpet; Steve Ash, piano; Felix Lemerle, guitar; Jen Hodge, double bass; Alex Raderman, drums. I brought my iPhone, microphone, tripod, and a notebook. Thrilling.
Recorded by Michael Steinman for JAZZ LIVES (www.jazzlives.w...).
❤💃👏🏻
Oh yeah!
And as Wynton says: if you’re traveling and playing gigs, all you need is a toothbrush and a photo of Louis Armstrong.
Swing, you Cats! Dig the great rhythm guitar & great brush work on the traps! Love the alto trumpet; didn’t know they existed. Jen, nice strong bass walkin’! Love & respect from So-Cal ( Bakersfield).
@@michaelhutchinson9413 Wynton may say it too, but the quote was first from Bunny Berigan. And the alto trumpet is officially an Eb alto horn, most often seen in marching bands. More from this night to come: welcome aboard!
I believe “Jive at Five “ was composed by Freddie Green. Wish I was there. You folks are perpetuating my kind of jazz!
Decca 78 label, original issue, says "Harry Edison".
Great piano solo! Is it possible that in future videos we can see him included? Maybe a different camera position ( if possible).
Thanks 😎🎸
He's more visible i the second set. But live recording in a restaurant-bar doesn't always afford all the angles viewers would like.
Having played in a few clubs myself, I do understand. You guys do have such a great group. Keep it up!
